Google Ads call tracking: count phone calls as conversions
Phone calls are the main lead source for many trades and service firms. Google Ads offers four ways to count them. Here is which one fits and how to test it.

What is Google Ads call tracking?
Google Ads call tracking counts phone calls that come from your advertising as conversions, so that bidding and reports include them. Google Ads offers four sources: calls directly from your ads, calls to a number on your website, clicks on your number on a mobile site, and calls you import from another system. For roofers, plumbers, solicitors, clinics and other local businesses in the UK and Ireland, calls are often the most valuable lead, and without call tracking Smart Bidding simply does not see them.
Each source measures something different. Some count real calls with a duration, others only count the intention to call. Choosing the right mix is the main decision, and it decides how much you can trust the numbers in your account.
Which call conversion types does Google Ads offer?
| Source | What is counted | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Calls from ads | Calls placed from a call asset or call ad | Call reporting with a Google forwarding number |
| Calls to a number on your website | Calls after a click on your ad, made from your site | Google forwarding number and a website snippet |
| Clicks on your number on your mobile website | Taps on a tel: link | Google tag or Google Tag Manager trigger |
| Imported calls | Calls recorded in your CRM or phone system | Click ID or caller data and a regular import |
Calls from ads and calls from your website both rely on Google forwarding numbers. Google shows a forwarding number instead of your own number, routes the call to you and records start time, duration, area code and whether the call connected. According to Google, the United Kingdom and Ireland are among the countries where these numbers are available.
Imported calls work the other way round. Your own phone system or CRM records the calls, and you upload them to Google Ads later, matched to the original ad click. This route needs more preparation, because the click ID has to be stored with each enquiry, but it is the only source that can tell Google Ads which calls actually became paid work. Businesses with a sales team that qualifies leads by phone often use it as the primary conversion and keep the other sources as secondary signals for reporting.

How do you set up call conversions from ads?
Calls from ads are the simplest source because no website changes are needed. Add a call asset with your business number to your campaigns, make sure call reporting is switched on, and create a conversion action for calls from ads. In that conversion action, set the minimum call length that counts as a conversion. Google Ads uses 60 seconds by default, which works for many service businesses, but a locksmith may prefer a shorter value and a legal practice a longer one.
Give the conversion a value if you can. A rough figure based on how many calls turn into paid jobs is better than no value, because value-based bidding needs it. Keep the action as a primary conversion only if calls are really a business goal; otherwise mark it as secondary so it appears in reports without steering bids. Review the figure every few months, because the share of calls that turn into paid jobs changes with the season.
How do website call conversions work?
Website call conversions track people who click an ad, land on your site and then call the number shown there. A small script replaces your number with a Google forwarding number for visitors who arrived from an ad, and Google connects the call to the original click. In Google Tag Manager you use the Google Ads calls from website conversion tag with the phone number exactly as it appears on the page.
The number replacement relies on Google Ads click information stored in the visitor's browser. Under the cookie rules in the UK and Ireland this counts as advertising measurement, which generally requires consent. This article is not legal advice. Visitors who reject marketing cookies see your normal number, and their calls are not attributed. That is expected behaviour, not a fault, and Google Consent Mode v2 should pass the correct consent state to the tag.

Should you count clicks on your phone number?
Clicks on a tel: link are easy to measure and work without forwarding numbers, so many sites start here. They are useful as a signal, but they overstate real leads: people tap by mistake, hang up before anyone answers or call a second time. Use them carefully:
- Track them as a separate conversion action, not combined with real calls
- Mark them as secondary if you also have forwarding numbers in place
- Check that the trigger fires only on tel: links, not on every click in the header
- Compare the count with your phone system once a month
Common mistakes with call tracking for Google Ads
The most common mistake is counting the same call twice: once as a tap on the number and once as a website call conversion, both set to primary. Bidding then values calls twice as highly as they really are. A second classic is a website number that differs slightly from the number configured in the tag, for example with or without the area code in brackets, so the replacement never happens. A third is missing consent handling, where the call script runs before the banner has been answered.
Take a roofing company in Cork. It counted every tap on its number as a primary conversion and wondered why cost per lead looked low while the phone stayed quiet. After the review, taps became secondary, website call conversions with a 60-second threshold became primary, and the business imported booked jobs from its CRM each week. The numbers fell, but now they matched the order book.
How Trackum sets up call tracking
Trackum sets up Google Ads conversion tracking as an extra for €50 plus VAT and creates the conversion actions in your account itself, for example for taps on your phone number and for your contact form, tested with and without consent in Google Tag Manager. If your CRM records which calls became paying jobs, Trackum can also send those sales back to Google Ads as offline conversions, again as a €50 extra. Before you decide, the free check at trackum.app/check shows which tags load on your site and whether your banner blocks them correctly.
Frequently asked questions
Does Google Ads call tracking record the conversation?
No. Google Ads call reporting shows data such as the start time, duration, caller area code and whether the call was answered. It does not record or store what is said on the call.
What call length should count as a conversion?
Google Ads lets you set a minimum call length for each call conversion action, and 60 seconds is the usual default. Pick a value that separates real enquiries from wrong numbers, for example by checking how long a typical quote request takes.
Are Google forwarding numbers available in the UK and Ireland?
Yes, the United Kingdom and Ireland are on the list of countries where Google forwarding numbers are offered. The numbers belong to Google and can only be used for call reporting and website call conversions.
Is a tap on my phone number the same as a call?
No. A tap on a tel: link only shows that someone tried to call from a mobile device. Whether the call connected and how long it lasted is only known with forwarding numbers or with call data you import.
